Former first-class player Abhay Sharma has applied for the job of Indian Men’s cricket team’s fielding coach, a BCCI source confirmed. Abhay has prior experience having worked with India A, India U-19, and the Women’s team.
The current support staff and head coach Ravi Shastri will be exiting the team when their contract runs out at the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Batting coach, Vikram Rathour, is the only one expected to stay on once the tournament ends.

It has now emerged that Abhay is the frontrunner to pocked the fielding coach’s role, and he will be replacing R Sridhar. Speaking to PTI, a BCCI source stated: “Abhay’s (Sharma) application has come today.” The BCCI will accept the applications until November 3.
Abhay Sharma’s prior experience
The 52-year-old Abhay Sharma has worked with the expected-to-be head coach, Rahul Dravid. Abhay has played 89 first-class games while playing for Delhi, Railways, and Rajasthan. He has toured Zimbabwe in 2016 as the fielding coach once, but only on a temporary basis.
Of late, Abhay’s work with the Indian women’s team has been praised by Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur. “Abhay sir has been with us for quite some time. His little awareness makes you a better player. That is being reflected in our fielding.”

“Earlier also, we used to make a lot of effort but the little adjustments that he has done with our fielding, the individual sessions that he has taken with the players that have helped.”
“The most important point was he judged every player where can do better fielding, so we are getting the results day by day from the effort that we have put in, which is a great positive,” Harmanpreet had said.
Abhay has been part of 10 India A tours so far and has also been part of three U-19 World Cups.
