Former England captain Michael Vaughan wants all-rounder Mitchell Marsh to open the batting for the Australia National Cricket Team in the upcoming Ashes 2023 against England.
The Kangaroos have seen success with their regular Test match opening duo of Usman Khwaja and David Warner. While the latter has shown little form in recent times, the former impressed in the recent Border-Gavaskar trophy against India. The duo is also unique, as both the batters are left-handed.

Having not played a Test match since The Ashes 2019 in England, Mitchell Marsh is returning from an injury. In-form before going on the shelf in December 2022, he is expected to make it to the playing XI for the first Test in Edgbaston.

In a recent interview with The Age, Michael Vaughan stated that Australia should push Mitchell Marsh to the top of the batting order to create a right-left combo at the top.

“I would honestly look at someone like Mitchell Marsh to open the batting because it gets him in the team. He can bowl you a few hours. He’s done all right against England. He’s a right-hander and he might go down the aggressive route.”
Michael Vaughan went on to say that Australia’s batting duos have struggled to build partnerships in recent times, so there is no harm in trying something new.
Michael Vaughan claims that England fear David Warner’s ability to have “one of those series”
David Warner has an underwhelming record in Test matches on the British Isles. In the 13 matches he has played there (all against England), he has scored 651 runs with an average of 26.04. This includes his dismal 2019 Ashes series, where he scored 95 runs in 10 innings.
Despite this, Michael Vaughan still believes that England somewhat fear Warner, in case the 36-year-old goes on to have “one of those series.”
During the same interaction with The Age, Vaughan said –
“The one thing with David Warner, I know England fear him, I do know that the captain worries that Warner could come out of the traps and just have one of those series. And he’s never done it really in England. He doesn’t have much of a record here. I know Anderson and Broad don’t mind bowling to him.”
Michael Vaughan then went on to say that it will require out-of-the-box thinking from both parties for one of them to come out on top.
Australia will be looking to defend the urn for the fourth time in a row, as they take on England in the prestigious five-match series, from June 16 to July 31.
