Ashes 2023: Mohammad Kaif Believes That Jonny Bairstow's Dismissal During The Lord's Test Was Fair

Former India hitter Mohammad Kaif believes Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal was fair and square, and that “there is no question of spirit of cricket.” Bairstow was stumped by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey on day five of the second Ashes Test after leaving his crease to speak with non-striker Ben Stokes after dodging a bouncer.
The third Ashes Test will begin on Thursday, July 6 at Headingley in Leeds. England has only won two of their past 18 Tests against Australia and will need to mount a strong recovery if they are to take the urn.

“There’s no question of ‘spirit of cricket’ here” – Mohammad Kaif
While many commentators and the England team have expressed discontent with the way Bairstow was dismissed, others have supported the events that led to his removal. The wicket changed the course of the game since Ben Stokes was left without any reliable teammates at the other end.
The captain of England shone brightly at the Home of Cricket with a brilliant century. Eventually, Australia won the Test by 43 runs and took a 2-0 series lead. Mohammed Kaif told the Times of India that the batter should be mindful of his location following the delivery.

“There’s no question of ‘spirit of cricket’ here. It’s not rocket science. Bairstow was out of his crease and was thus run out. He had been doing it a few times and Alex Carey was aware of that. As a batsman, you have to be aware that you have to be in the crease if the ball goes to the wicketkeeper,” Mohammad Kaif said.

“It’s elementary, something that I’ve seen from my club cricket days. A lot of times in the Ranji Trophy, you bat out of your crease to cut the swing and seam on a seaming track. However, you quickly go back into your crease once the ball reaches the wicketkeeper. If you don’t, you will be in danger of being run out. It has been happening from time immemorial,” Mohammad Kaif added.

“Virat Kohli stays out of his crease but quickly returns behind the line”- Mohammad Kaif
The batter who got caught up in this unusual situation is not Jonny Bairstow. Brendon McCullum, the current England coach, has previously been involved in a situation when the wicketkeeper caused the dismissal. Mohammad Kaif spoke on how batters should prevent such dismissals using Virat Kohli as an example.
“If you notice Virat Kohli bat, he stays out of his crease but quickly returns behind the line the moment the ball goes behind the stumps,” Mohammad Kaif said.
