Australia skipper Pat Cummins described the first match of the Ashes 2023 series at Edgbaston in Birmingham as one of the best matches he played in his career in the longer format of the game. Pat Cummins pointed out that both sides were favourites throughout the first Test of the five-match series.

Pat Cummins shone with both bat and ball in Australia’s two-wicket win. The 30-year-old added a crucial 38 runs with the bat in their first innings. The right-arm pacer picked up four wickets in England’s second innings. He scored an unbeaten 44 runs to help his team register a memorable win.

It Was 50-50 The Whole Way Along – Pat Cummins

During the post-match press conference, Pat Cummins said that they were confident about winning the match when they came close to chasing down the target.

“This is No.1, yeah absolutely. Start of an Ashes series, definitely number one. Probably when we got down to 10 runs or so required or maybe 16 runs or something, I thought like 2 runs an over and felt pretty confident about winning,” Pat Cummins.

“It felt like from almost the first session of Day 1, it was 50-50 the whole way along. Like it never felt like it swung too far, one way or the other,” he added.

Australia were struggling at one stage, with a score of 227-8 while chasing 281 runs. Cummins and Nathan Lyon added an unbeaten 55-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Lyon supported his skipper from the other end and scored 16 runs off 28 balls.

Away Test Matches Are Really Hard To Win – Pat Cummins

Cummins emphasized the significance of good performances in away Tests, adding that they have been consistent over the last 20 matches. He praised the team’s approach and determination to achieve success in these challenging matches.

“We have been big on how we want to play. I think we have been consistent over the last 20 Test matches or so and this time it was good enough to get a win. Away Test matches are really hard to win, so to come here and win, going about the way that we want to play has been great.”

Australia finished in No. 1 place in the previous cycle of the World Test Championship. The Australian team registered wins in India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. They went on to beat India in the WTC final match in England to claim their first title win in red-ball cricket.

The Pat Cummins-led team took an early 1-0 lead in the ongoing Test series against England. The Australia national cricket team will take on the Ben Stokes-led team in the second Test of the Ashes series at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London beginning on June 28.
