PC: X

Sri Lanka are currently involved in a white-ball series against Zimbabwe, as they are preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup in a two-match ODI and three-match T20I series. They have been fined for keeping a slow over rate in the first ODI in Harare.

Sri Lanka cricket has sent their team for a five-match-long white-ball series, three of which will be T20Is that would mark their preparations ahead of the Asia Cup, as they have been claimed to be one of the favourites in the Asian competition despite the presence of World Champions India.

Thanks to Pathum Nissanka, Janith Liyanage, and Kamindu Mendis from Sri Lanka and Sikandar Raza from Zimbabwe, the match turned out to be a high-scoring thriller until Madushanka changed all with his brilliant bowling.

Sri Lanka fined for a slow over rate at Harare

The Lankans were penalized 5% of their match fees for having maintained a slow over-rate in the first ODI at Harare. There was no need for a formal hearing on the matter, as the Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka pled guilty and accepted the proposed sanction.

The sanction was imposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after the touring side was found to be one over short of the required target, even after all time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Dilshan Madushanka's hat-trick changed the course of the high-scoring thriller

Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka produced an extraordinary effect with the ball as he picked up a hat-trick in the first ODI against Zimbabwe, which helped the visitors seal a 7-run victory against the hosts.

With only ten runs needed in the final over of the game, Madushanka came in to grab three wickets off the first three balls to tilt the game in favour of the Lankans.

With this, he not only sealed the game for his nation but also became the third Lankan pacer to have picked multiple hat-tricks in international cricket, alongside former legends Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga.

Wanindu Hasaranga to return to the Sri Lanka T20 XI for the Asia Cup

Sri Lankan star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is likely to return to the Lankan Playing XI for the Asia Cup games after being rested for the Zimbabwe tour. He has been named in the squad for the Asia Cup.

Hasaranga has been the lead spinner for Sri Lanka in recent times and has performed overwhelmingly in all ICC and ACC tournaments. The Lankans, who would be given a high stature since they were the winners of the T20 Asia Cup back in 2022 and the runners-up of the ODI Asia Cup in 2023, would need Hasaranga to keep their esteem intact.

Moreover, Hasaranga adds to Lanka's spin attack already comprising the likes of Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage, while he brings along some power-hitting cameos down the order.
