Former Australian legend Glenn McGrath has backed his skipper Pat Cummins to play all five Ashes Tests saying that he does not need to take a break. Australia are 2-1 up in the series. England managed to keep the series alive by winning the third Test in Headingley. The fourth Test match starts in Manchester on July 19.

Pat Cummins won back-to-back Test matches of this Ashes series as a skipper. Under him, Australia won the first Test by two wickets with himself playing a key role. The Aussies won the second Test as well by 43 runs as England could not chase down the 371 needed for victory at Lord’s.

Talking to Cricket.com.au, McGrath said that Pat Cummins should not think about getting rest just for the sake of it. He further said that if he is enjoying captaincy and feeling good about himself, he should play the remaining two matches.

Dont Like Having A Rest For The Sake Of Having A Rest: Glenn McGrath On Pat Cummins

“If he’s fine, feeling good, enjoying it, switched on and still mentally focused, I don’t like having a rest for the sake of having a rest. I know it’s a different mindset these days – it’s not about the XI, it’s about the squad, and the nature of the beast is we (fast bowlers) put a lot of stress on our bodies. But I do believe in survival of the fittest,” McGrath said in an interaction with cricket.com.au.

He further cited the examples of England pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad who have been examples of longevity in modern Test cricket.

“The best will come to the top and the ones with the best work ethic will always win out. You look at Broady and Jimmy (England veterans Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson) – they’ve played 165 and 181 Test matches (each) – that’s incredible” said McGrath.

The legendary pacer further said that as a skipper he should play every Test match as it is a part of the WTC 2023-35 cycle and everything is on the line.

“If you’re not physically or mentally exhausted, I can’t see why Pat Cummins would have a rest, especially when things are on the line every single game now with the World Test Championship” McGrath pointed out.

Australia are leading the points table for the WTC 2023-25 cycle having won the first two Test matches. They are leading with a PCT point of 61.11 followed by England at 27.78.
