Australia opener David Warner has expressed his frustration at Cricket Australia (CA) for the time they have taken to amend the code for his lifetime leadership ban. Warner had been unable to hold a captaincy position in Australian cricket after being handed a lifetime ban as a result of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

The 36-year-old had been seen as Aaron Finch’s successor in terms of limited-overs captaincy, but his lifetime captaincy ban was a major impediment in that process. CA announced on Monday that it has changed its code of conduct, which previously stated that players had no opportunity to have a sanction reviewed once it had been accepted.

It’s Traumatic For Me And My Family – David Warner

Speaking at a Kayo Sports promotion event on Monday, David Warner expressed his disappointment with the delayed process, saying it could have been done much earlier. He stated that the process had been “drawn out” and “traumatic” for him.

“I’m not a criminal. You should get a right of an appeal at some stage. I understand that they put a ban in place but banning someone for life, I think it’s a bit harsh,” Warner said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“Where it’s been disappointing, it’s taken this long to get to where it has. It was brought up in I think February this year. So it’s been drawn out. It’s traumatic for me and my family and everyone else that was involved in it. We haven’t needed to go back into that detail. We don’t need to relive what happened,” he added.

Warner has been in good form in the ongoing ODI series against England. He scored 86 runs off 84 deliveries in the first game, but only 16 runs in the second. Australia won both games to secure a dominating lead in the three-match series.
