Jos Buttler, the captain of England, stated on Thursday that the team’s performance, especially with the bat after they were in trouble, made up for the loss in the opening ODI of a three-match series in Australia.

Jos Buttler’s team put up a valiant effort despite having been shaken at the top by Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins only days after winning the T20 World Cup in Melbourne.

Wanted To Play With Intent: Jos Buttler

After starting out with 118 for 5, England recovered to score 287 for 9. Dawid Malan batted superbly, hitting 134 from 128 balls with the help of some excellent support from the lower-order hitters.

James Vince, the No. 4 batsman, was also unable to get going as he was removed for 5 by Australia’s new ODI captain Cummins, who had sent England in to bat after winning the toss. England also lost opener Jason Roy and Phil Salt within the first five overs.

Sam Billings (17) and Jos Buttler (29) were unable to turn their promising starts into noteworthy innings, but Malan and David Willy, who scored a 40-ball 34, put up a 58-run partnership. Liam Dawson and Chris Jordan, among others, made significant contributions as well.

289 wasn’t enough, though, as David Warner (86) and Travis Head completely destroyed England’s new-ball attack. After Australia put together an opening stand of 147, Steve Smith played fine innings in which he scored an unbeaten 80 from 78 balls.

“Not fussed about the result at all, it’s all about the character we showed. Wanted to play with intent. Dawid Malan a fantastic innings. To get to that score from the position we were in was brilliant. In the field we took risks and everyone responded,” Jos Buttler said.

Malan, meanwhile, was pleased with how he came up with 100 when he rejoined the team. Due to an injury earlier in the month, England’s star batter was forced to miss the semifinal and championship matches of the successful T20 World Cup campaign.

When batting with the tail, the former World No. 1 T20I batter, however, looked fluid and handled the pressure amazingly well.

“Tough to miss those two games with all the work you put in over three years. It was gutting. Then to come back here and score a hundred was extremely satisfying,” Malan added.

In the second ODI, which is slated to take place in Sydney on November 19, England will try to recover and tie the series. The last ODI will take place on November 21 in Melbourne.
