The Australia National Cricket Team’s modern-day batting great Steve Smith has hinted at his potential retirement from competitive cricket, saying that he is unsure of how long he will play.

Steve Smith, who is a part of the batting Fab-4 alongside Joe Root, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, smashed a terrific ton in the Sydney Test against South Africa on Thursday, January 5. The 33-year-old scored 104 runs off 192 balls before being cleaned up by Keshav Maharaj and he also had a brilliant 209-run partnership in 377 balls with opener Usman Khawaja.

Smith will be part of the Australia tour of India 2023 and the Australia tour of England 2023, but he is not looking further down the road than that.

Smith showered praise on the 36-year-old opening batsman Usman Khawaja’s longevity and following that he was questioned whether he would be in Australia for future cricketing summers. He responded (as quoted by Fox Cricket):

“I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m enjoying it at the moment. I really can’t say how long I’ll play for. I’m not sure.

“Take it one tour at a time. Just enjoy it and enjoy training and trying to get better as well. Whilst I’m doing that I’m happy playing. But I don’t know how long it’ll last.”

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in November, Steve Smith had talked about retiring early from cricket.

“No, I don’t have a plan, but I’m 33 now. I’ve been playing international cricket for 13 years. It’s a long time. I’m still enjoying it, but I’m certainly closer to the end than the start, that’s for sure.”

With his remarkable century in the first innings against South Africa, Smith has become the fourth-highest run-getter for the Australia National Cricket Team in the history of Test cricket.

Also, he surpassed Sir Don Bradman to become the joint-third highest century scorer for Australia National Cricket Team in Test cricket. Overall, Smith has scored 8647 runs from 92 Tests, including 30 centuries. While talking about this, he said:

“I don’t think about that stuff a great deal but I did look up at the board just after I got a 100 and to sit third on the list of all-time Australians, there’s some pretty big names there so that’s pretty cool,” Smith said.

“Fourth on the run-scorers list (too) … I don’t play for that kind of stuff but it was cool to look up and see my name amongst those great players. It was pretty special.”
