In the second Test in Melbourne against South Africa, Australia is on the verge of winning the series. In response, South Africa’s dismal performance with the bat remained as they lost the majority of their batting order at 128 and were approaching an innings defeat at the MCG when Australia bowled the Proteas out for 189.

Although the game has mainly stayed one-sided so far, tensions rose on Day 4 of the contest when Mitchell Starc interrupted his bowling stride to caution batter, Theunis de Bruyn, from exiting the line at the non-striker’s end.

Numerous players have recently employed the dismissal technique, most widely and colloquially known as the “Mankad,” and while the rule does not require a batsman to get a warning before being dismissed, many cricketers still chose to do so.

De Bruyn was forewarned by Starc, who can also be caught yelling at the batsman on the Stump mike. “Stay in the crease. It’s not that hard. It’s (the crease) there for a reason mate!” Starc said.

In a recent ODI at Lord’s, Deepti Sharma, a women’s all-rounder for India, stirred controversy after she run Charlotte Dean out at the non-striker’s end for England’s final wicket, leading to India’s victory in the match as well as the series. Although the dismissal being lawful, several former and present English cricket players were contemptuous of Deepti.

Ravichandran Ashwin, an off-spinner for India, has strongly supported the dismissal. He similarly outraged people at the moment by using the “Mankad” to remove Jos Buttler in the 2019 Indian Premier League.

After recent legal changes made by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), this method of dismissal was renamed “run-out.” Later, the MCC also responded to the Deepti Sharma incident, declaring “MCC’s message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler’s hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen.”
