The Australia National Cricket Team have been under immense pressure after their loss against the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in the first Test at the MCG2 in Darwin. The Bangla Tigers dominated the Aussies at their home and won the match by 9 wickets. Ahead of the second Test match, former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie has shared his insights on the loss.
The Aussies will look to bounce back in the second Test match in Mackay, and if any mishap happens in the second Test match and Bangladesh secure a win, or they draw the match and win the series, it will be the biggest upset and downfall for the No.1 Test side. There have been concerns over the age and performance of some cricketers.
Jason Gillespie slams Australia batters
While speaking exclusively with the Indian Express, Jason Gillespie was asked multiple questions about Australian cricket. One of the first questions was about the team’s performance. He backed his captain Pat Cummins and stated that the batters could not perform against the Bangla Tigers bowlers. He also mentioned the selectors bringing in new players as this team is ageing.
Gillespie said, "Pat Cummins’ captaincy was fine, but Australia batted poorly in the first innings. Bangladesh outplayed them throughout the game. They played old-fashioned, patient Test cricket. Australia will bounce back strongly in Mackay. However, this is an ageing team, and selectors will bring in new players over the next 6-12 months."
"For now, they have got in Matt Renshaw in place of Jake Weatherald for the Mackay Test. Other than that, the only discussion will be whether Scott Boland plays; I’m not sure if that’s in place of one of the seamers or the spinner. But Australia will bounce back strongly. The surface will be very good at Mackay."
Jason Gillespie backs Australia's pace trio
Apart from speaking on the team’s performance, Jason Gillespie shared his views on the pace trio, which comprises Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. He backs them believed that they bowled well and also has faith that if they bowl well in the second game, Australia can beat Bangladesh.
Gillespie said, "They’ve been great. I thought they bowled quite well in the first Test. But Bangladesh just batted very, very well. I think that if they bowl the same way again, they’ll have a chance to perform better against Bangladesh."
"Bangladesh’s seamers were good": Jason Gillespie on Bangladesh pacers' performances
Gillespie also praised Bangladesh pacers, as they bowled amazingly in the match, and also lauded the opening batter Tanzid Hasan, who scored his maiden hundred in Australia in the first game. He believes that now the challenge for the Bangla Tigers to keep their head high and continue with the same momentum, as Australia will come all guns blazing after losing the first game.
He further added, "Bangladesh’s seamers were good as well. They deserved to win. Tanzid Hasan got a hundred and other batters contributed to get a lead in the first innings. Some good signs for Bangladesh… Their challenge now is to back that up. And the Australians will want to bounce back from what was a pretty disappointing performance."
