Australia Playing 11 vs South Africa – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 10. Australia takes on South Africa in match 10 of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Lucknow on October 12. The match starts at 2 pm IST and is the second game for both teams in the tournament. This is the first of five games to be played in Lucknow.
Australia are heading into this game after their loss to India in their campaign opener in Chennai. The team needs to do a quick turnaround as they get set to face the mighty Proteas. The Aussies just recently lost an ODI series against South Africa leading into the World Cup.
They will be playing at a venue where aids spin and they are short on spin resources. Ashton Agar is unfortunately ruled out of the World Cup and Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell are the only two spin options the Aussies have. India negated their threat particularly well in the match not giving them wickets and particularly playing the leggie well.
Pat Cummins, the skipper has got a few selection headaches ahead of this game in terms of getting the right combination. They will continue to miss Travis Head and Ashton Agar. Given the resources they have, the combination they played against India was the best combination they could play in this game as well.
Australia were bowled out for just 199 in Chennai and needs to put up a better effort with the bat whether batting first or chasing. In this article, we predict their XI against South Africa.
Australia Playing 11 vs South Africa – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 10
David Warner
Warner will open the innings. He scored 41 off 52 balls against India. Against South Africa, he needs to come up with a better effort with the bat and possibly score a century to help his team post a big score.
Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh scored a duck against India. He also dropped Virat Kohli’s catch early on in his innings which became the turning point in the match. Marsh needs to open his account after bagging a duck.
Steve Smith
Smith will bat at three. He played a flawless innings before he was castled by Ravindra Jadeja. His job will be to bat through against the Proteas. Australia needs an in-form Smith if they are to win the tournament.
Marnus Labuschagne
Labuschagne replaced Agar in Australia’s World Cup squad on the back of his good form with the bat. He scored 27 against India and needs to score a lot more against South Africa.
Glenn Maxwell
Maxwell will slot in at five. He is playing his third World Cup and needs to be a matchwinner for his side. He scored just 15 and went wicketless against India.
Marcus Stoinis / Cameron Green
One between Green or Stoinis should play as the seam-bowling all-rounder. Stonis having played for LSG has a better understanding of the conditions in Lucknow. Green scored just 8 and bowled just two overs against India.
Alex Carey (WK)
Alex Carey will slot in at seven and is the specialist keeper. He is a good batter against spin bowling and needs to bring his shots into play against the Protean spinners. Carey scored a duck against India.
Pat Cummins (C)
Cummins will bat at eight and lengthen the Australian batting. He scored 15 off 24 balls and ent for 33 in almost seven overs against India. His captaincy will be tested against South Africa.
Mitchell Starc
Starc will bat at nine. He scored crucial 28 runs to take Australia to 199 against India and also took the early wicket of Ishan Kishan. He now has 50 World Cup wickets joining a list of elite bowlers.
Josh Hazlewood
Hazlewood will be the third seamer. He took the early wickets of Rohit and Shreyas Iyer to send India early jitters. How he bowls in the Lucknow track will be an interesting observation.
Adam Zampa
Zampa concludes Australia’s likely XI against South Africa. He was expensive against India going for 53 runs in his eight overs and remaining wicketless. He is 8 short of 150 ODI wickets.
