The Caribbean Premier League’s Barbados Royals announced on Wednesday that South African hitter David Miller will serve as their captain for the 2022 campaign (CPL).

The 32-year-old will be closely collaborating with head coach Trevor Penney and Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, who he played under while at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, as he takes on the additional job.

The swashbuckling finisher has strong links to the Rajasthan Royals, a partner franchise of Barbados, and is excited to be returning to one of their organisations as a captain of the group after having previously represented the Royals in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Privilege To Have Been Appointed As The Captain: David Miller

“During my time at the Royals in the IPL, I always felt very valued and have been able to establish a deep connection with the team. It is an exciting time for me to come to the Barbados Royals, and a privilege to have been appointed as the Captain.

It is a team that has an abundance of young and experienced talent from the Caribbean and I am looking forward to working with the entire group to get down to achieving our objectives for the 2022 season,” said David Miller in a statement.

Coach Trevor Penny Delighted To Have David Miller As Captain

Miller, who previously played for the St. Lucia Zouks in 2016 and the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2018, is back in the CPL after a three-season absence.

In 15 innings of CPL play, the middle-order hitter has amassed 332 runs with a strike rate of over 146. Miller was in outstanding form during the 2022 IPL season, amassing 481 runs in 16 matches with a strike rate of 142.73.

“Having worked with David (Miller) before at the Rajasthan Royals, we knew he has a cricketing brain which not only reads situations very well on the field but is also very passionately involved off the field.

He is someone who helps in creating a perfect environment for his teammates to excel in, and that is what we are expecting out of him here at Barbados, where he will be leading the franchise,” said head coach Trevor Penney.

“He has shown tremendous experience and guile in the last few months, and drove his team to IPL glory…unfortunately beating us in the final! We are all delighted to have signed him and look forward to working with him during the season,” he added.

Kyle Mayers To Lead Barbados Royals In THE 6IXTY In David Miller’s Absence

The Barbados Royals will enter the season full of optimism after keeping a core of strong West Indian players like Jason Holder, Oshane Thomas, Obed McCoy, Kyle Mayers, Hayden Walsh, Devon Thomas, and Nyeem Young.

These players will be complemented by seasoned T20 specialists like Quinton de Kock, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Azam Khan, Corbin Bosch, and David Miller, with the explosive South African at the head of the pack.

Barbados Royals have also named their captain for the inaugural THE 6IXTY event, which takes place before the T20 season. Kyle Mayers, a Barbados native and West Indian all-rounder, will captain the Royals in the brand-new, innovation-driven competition.

The 29-year-old all-rounder from Barbados has recently proven crucial for the West Indies, providing some memorable performances across formats and contributing with both bat and ball.

Mayers, who has been a crucial element of the Royals’ setup since 2020 and is a crucial component of the central core, is prepared to take the helm in this new format for the two-time CPL winners. The new 60-ball competition, THE 6IXTY, is put on by Cricket West Indies and the Caribbean Premier League and features some of the best cricketers in the globe.

The Caribbean Premier League, which will take place from August 30 to September 30, 2022, will be contested directly after the event, which runs from August 24 to August 28.
