West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle has confirmed that he will be skipping the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 season and will instead play in the newly introduced format, ‘6ixty’.

The ‘6ixty’ is a T10 tournament with innovative roles that will be played from August 24 to 28 in St Kitts, just days prior to the CPL 2022. Gayle is an ambassador for the new format.

I am going for the shorter format this year. I am genuinely excited about the current innovations in the 6ixty and seeing how they play out.

In particular I am looking forward to the mystery team ball and hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls to unlock a third powerplay over,” Gayle was quoted as saying.

Several other Windies players will be part of the mini-tournament as well, considering their series against New Zealand will conclude on August 21. The overseas players participating in the tourney will be arriving early.

As for Gayle, he won the CPL 2021 season with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots last year. In total, he has scored 2519 runs in the league at an average of 36.50. He is the second-highest run-scorer in the league after Lendl Simmons (2629 runs).

The innovative rules of 6ixty:

Instead of 10 wickets, each batting team has six wickets.
Batting teams can ‘unlock’ a floating third powerplay over by hitting two sixes in the initial two-over powerplay.
Teams will bowl five consecutive overs from each end, rather than switching ends after each over.
There is also an in-game penalty for slow-over rate: If a team fails to bowl their 10 overs within 45 minutes, a fielder will be removed for the final six balls.
The most exciting rule which gets the involvement of the fans: Fans will be able to vote for a ‘mystery free-hit’ via an app or website.
