Despite Delhi Capitals starting their IPL 2021 season well enough, head coach Ricky Ponting feels Shreyas Iyer’s absence. Regular captain Shreyas Iyer’s shoulder injury, sustained in the first ODI against England in Pune forced him out of IPL 2021. Ricky Ponting reportedly got in touch via a video call with Shreyas Iyer, requesting him to be Capitals’ 12th man.
Shreyas Iyer has turned the Delhi Capitals’ fortunes around by making them one of the consistent teams in recent teams. The right-handed batsman took charge in 2018 and lead the Capitals to the playoffs in 2019, followed by their first final the following year. Iyer has undergone a successful shoulder injury; however, he would be out of action for a considerable time due to recovery time.
Ricky Ponting told Shreyas Iyer that the Delhi Capitals miss him and it does not feel the same. The former Australian skipper said in a banter that Iyer has to maintain a seven-day quarantine only and that they need a 12th man or someone to run drinks for them.
“Missing you, it doesn’t feel the same. Come and join us, it’s just 7 days (quarantine). It will go fast, trust me. Come on, we need a 12th man. We need someone to run the drinks for us,” Ponting said in the video uploaded by the Delhi Capitals.
Delhi Capitals start IPL 2021 on a winning note under new captain:
Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals made a thunderous start to their IPL 2021 campaign under Rishabh Pant, beating Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw stitched a 138-run stand to make a mockery of the 189-run target set by the Super Kings. With Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje set to be available from the next game, the Capitals can only get strong. They will face the Rajasthan Royals next on the 15th of April at the Wankhede Stadium.
