The upset trend in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is at its peak as Rashid Khan's Afghanistan defeated Mitchell Marsh's Australia in the Super 8s.

It was a match that will forever be embedded in the history of Afghanistan cricket and the moment of victory over the Aussies is on to cherish forever. Rashid Khan's men have finally taken their revenge on Australia for what the latter team had done last year during the ICC 50-over World Cup in India.

Glenn Maxwell had single-handedly decimated Afghanistan with a sensational Double century. One-legged Maxwell had proved to be too much for the Asians but the result that they earned today against the same opposition was just incredible. Not only have they helped themselves in terms of semi-final qualification but they have also acted as a helping for team India.

The onus is now on Rohit Sharma's Indian team to try and beat Australia tomorrow in both of the team's last Super 8 games in St. Lucia. If the Men in Blue can beat the Aussies by a big margin and Afghanistan beats Bangladesh through a clinical performance, then we might see the Indians and the Afghans reach the next round.

Today's win against Australia marks the first time of Afghanistan beat a high-profile team in the World Cup. Rashid Khan and co. have now become the first Afghan side to beat the Baggy Greens, who lifted the World Test Championship and Cricket World Cup final in 2023.

A lot of the credit goes to Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran for their opening partnership of 118 before small contributions helped them post 148. In response, Australia got off to a very poor start with Travis Head and David Warner scoring 0 and 3.

Mitchell Marsh amassed 12 off 9 while Afghani nightmare Glenn Maxwell smacked 59 off 41. However, the lack of support from other players made things difficult for Australia and they were bowled out for 127 with Gulbadin Naib picking man-of the match figures of 4/20.
