Cricket Australia has denied recent claims of Justin Langer having to reapply for the position of head coach. Langer’s contract is expiring after Australia’s tour of Pakistan in June later this year. He took over after the sandpaper gate scandal which saw a huge change in the nation’s approach towards the game thereafter. The body met in person with Langer to discuss the future roadmap of the Australian cricket team.

There were reports that Justin Langer got an angry meeting after being told he may need to reapply for his job. The local media in Australia further wrote that Langer went ballistic” during talks with senior Cricket Australia staff over his future. While Cricket Australia has accepted that talks with langer regarding his future are on, it has denied claims of any disagreement with the former Australian cricketer.

While we do not comment on confidential conversations, we felt on this occasion it was important to correct the record. Among other false claims, we reject outright the assertion that the meeting was fiery or heated and that Justin was asked to reapply for his job” the governing body said in a statement.

“Justin has always been contracted as Head Coach through to the middle of this year and we have consistently maintained that discussions around the future of the role would commence following the conclusion of the men’s Ashes series. Friday’s meeting was the first time that we had the opportunity to meet together in person, reflect on the team’s success and discuss the road ahead” it added.

While Langer’s coaching style has been criticised time and again for his headmaster-like leadership style, his recent work with the Australian team was key to them winning the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. He has also worked hard behind the scenes of changing their style and attitude towards the game after the sandpaper gate scandal.

Australia’s test and white-ball captains Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch are expected to have a say in Langer’s future as Australia’s head coach.
