Sunil Gavaskar, a great Indian batter, thinks that the controversial Yo-Yo test is an incorrect indicator of a cricketer’s level of fitness.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that the test would once more be utilized as a criterion for selection before an overseas assignment, and the newly-elected board and team management reached an understanding during a review meeting on January 3.

The Yo-Yo test was created under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri in an effort to raise the bar for team fitness. Due to their inability to meet the established cutoff score, some players have previously not been selected due to the demanding test.

Sunil Gavaskar said in his Mid Day column that the fitness standards needed for fast bowlers, batters, and wicketkeepers were very different:

“The point I’m trying to make is that fitness is a personal thing, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. Quick bowlers require a different level than spinners, wicketkeepers require an even higher level, and batsmen may be the least. So it’s difficult when the criteria are defined for everyone rather than according to one’s specialization” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“Cricket fitness should be the prime consideration. And yes, it would be revealing if these fitness tests are done in the public domain with the media present for then we would know if a player is ‘yo yo’ or no-no.”

The BCCI has also chosen to use DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) in addition to the Yo-Yo test before selection. As a result, the medical team and exercise instructors can view a number of internal factors, including bone density and body fat percentage.
