Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) chances of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs took a huge blow after their crushing 9-wicket defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians in the 38th game of the ongoing IPL 2025.
Mumbai Indians pretty much outplayed Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium to register their third win in a row and fourth win in eight games this season. Batting first, the Chennai-based outfit recovered from 63/3 to post a competitive total of 176/5 in the allotted 20 overs.
Chennai has won just 2 matches
Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube impressed with the bat for the visitors as both of them hit half-centuries. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 53 while Dube scored 50. For the Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 for 25 off his 4 overs.
With the bat, Mumbai Indians chased down the total inside 16 overs by losing a solitary wicket. Rohit Sharma roared back to form, scoring an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav scored an unbeaten 68 off just 30 balls.
The win also ended Mumbai's five-match losing streak against CSK. They had not defeated their arch-rivals since 2022.

Playoffs qualification scenario for CSK:
With only two wins from eight games, CSK are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table. While a win over Mumbai Indians would not have put them in a very strong position to make it to the last four, the defeat has surely dealt a huge blow.
It has now made the task of qualifying for the playoffs nearly impossible for the five-time champions. With only six league games left, CSK now need to win all of the remaining games to secure a place in the top four. In the previous seasons, seven or eight wins were enough to secure a place in the playoffs.
Chennai Super Kings will need other teams' support
CSK will also have to hope that other results go their way. So, their fate is no more in their hands. Even if they win the remaining games, there is a good chance that they fail to qualify for the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians have improved their chances of making it to the last four. With four wins from eight games, they are currently in the sixth spot in the points table.
