The Sri Lankan-born Australian cricket coach and former cricketer, Dav Whatmore, has joined Baroda Cricket Association as a Director of Cricket and the head coach. In the process, he is set to earn a whopping INR 1 crore per season, which has made him the most expensive coach in the history of India’s first-class cricket.

Whatmore will join the team ahead of the upcoming domestic season. He has plenty of experience as a coach, having begun his career way back in the early ’90s. The 67-year-old’s biggest achievement came when Sri Lanka won the 1996 ODI World Cup during his tenure.

Baroda has seen tough times of late and their last winning season came back in 2000-01. Under Whatmore, the Krunal Pandyaled team is expected to thrive. The Aussie has also coached the Kerala side for a season in 2017-18, where they reached the quarterfinals for the first time.

Whatmore has also taken a role in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He joined the team in 2010 but stepped down the very next year after KKR lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2011 Eliminator.

He signed for Pakistan in March 2012 as the head coach. The appointment bore fruit almost immediately as Pakistan clinched the Asia Cup after defeating Bangladesh in the final. He left the side after his contract ended and moved on to greener pastures.

Just last month, Whatmore announced that he would be leaving Nepal Cricket Team a few months prior to the expiry of his contract. He cited personal reasons as the issue and his resignation also surprised plenty of people in the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).
