David Warner is about to be permitted to file an appeal against the lifetime leadership ban that Cricket Australia has imposed on him.

Warner has a lifetime ban from Australian cricket as a result of the ball-tampering scandal that occurred in 2018, so he is currently unable to serve as captain.

Even though Australian cricket has largely moved past the controversy, the 35-year-old has long expressed a desire to have that ban lifted. But it has since become evident that an appeal is more difficult than Warner had anticipated.

Players currently do not have the option to have a sanction that has already been accepted be reviewed. However, CA officials took some steps toward allowing change on Friday. The board has asked Jacqui Partridge, its head of integrity, to propose changes to the rules because Warner’s predicament and the current code of conduct are top priorities.

Players or officials would then have the option to ask that a penalty be reviewed after an “appropriate period.”

In a statement, Cricket Australia stated that it would be up to the applicant to demonstrate that they had undergone real change related to the offence they were punished for.

David Warner could fit the bill if eligible once back from Test duties:

Australia will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against England following the T20 World Cup, but will not play again in the format until March.

Australia will also be looking for a new T20 captain soon, with Finch expected to retire after the global tournament.

Aside from that, the Sydney Thunder have yet to name a captain for this season, and Warner could fill that role if he is eligible once he returns from Test duty.

Warner’s decision to sign a two-year contract with the Thunder and return to the Big Bash League has earned him some points with CA officials.
