Delhi Capital, on Saturday (April 27) beat Mumbai Indians by 10 runs to register their fifth win in the ongoing IPL 2024. Chasing 258, MI finished their innings on 247/9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma added 35 runs for the first wicket in three overs before Khaleel Ahmed dismissed the latter for 8. In the following over, Mukesh Kumar sent back Kishan for 20 to leave DC two down for 45.
Suryakumar Yadav got the start but did not last long either and returned to the pavilion after scoring 26 to leave his team reeling at 65 for 3. Captain Hardik Pandya then provided the innings with some much-needed impetus by scoring 46 runs off just 24 balls. He and Tilak Varma added 61 runs for the fourth wicket.
Rasikh Salam then put DC back in the driver's seat by dismissing Pandya and Nehal Wadhera in quick succession to reduce MI to 140 for 5 in the 13th over. It was followed by a 70-run stand between Varma and Tim David. And just when it looked like the duo could pull off a sensational chase, Mukesh Kumar dismissed David for 37 in the 18th over to put DC back on top.
The equation was finally down to 25 runs off the last over. MI's hopes ended on the very first ball when Varma was run out while trying to complete a second run. Piyush Chawla and Luke Wood could only collect 13 runs off the last five balls.
DC vs MI: DC innings
Earlier in the game, DC posted their highest-ever IPL total as they finished their innings on 257/4 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. Opener Jake Fraser-McGurk was the architect of the big total, smashing 84 runs from just 27 balls with the help of 11 fours and six sixes.
He got going by hitting Luke Wood for 19 runs in the very first over and did not look back after that. The young Australian batter completed his fifty in just 15 balls in the fourth over. By the time the powerplay came to an end, DC had raced away to 92 for no loss with Fraser-McGurk scoring 78 of those runs. MI finally had the first breakthrough in the 8th over when veteran spinner Piyush Chawla dismissed Fraser-McGurk.
"That’s my role, go out there and score as many as I can and get the team off to a nice start. Not at all, if I get ones and twos it’s probably off the last ball of the over or if I mis-hit it," said Fraser-McGurk during the innings break.
"It’s something I’ve always had, getting that base right and having the right stance. There’s a lot of timing involved in it. The ones that you mis-hit, you need to have a strong core, upper body and glutes as well," he added.
13 runs after his departure, Abishek Porel departed too. The southpaw scored 36 runs before being sent back by Mohammad Nabi. It was followed by a 53-run stand between Shai Hope and Rishabh Pant. Luke Wood broke the stand by dismissing Hope for 41 in the 14th over.
Hope's knock came off just 17 balls and was studded with five sixes. DC collected 27 runs from 15th to 17th over before Tristan Stubbs broke the shackles in the 18th by taking Wood to the cleaners. He hit the left-arm pacer for five fours and a six to collect 26 runs off the over.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled a fine 19th over by dismissing Pant and conceding only 6 runs. In the final over, Stubbs and Axar Patel hit a six each to collect 17 runs and guided DC to a 250-plus total for the first time.
