Andre Russell recently sprung a huge surprise by announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The hard-hitting allrounder was released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the upcoming IPL auction and was set to be one of the biggest names in the auction.
However, the West Indies decided to stun the fans by announcing his retirement from the IPL. The decision brought an end to a very successful association between the player and the franchise. Andre Russell made his IPL debut in 2012 for Delhi Capitals before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014.
He was with the franchise since then before being released last month. Andre Russell was a part of the team's title-winning teams in 2014 and 2024. One of the best T20 allrounders in the world in the last one decade or so, Russell was also IPL's Most Valuable Player in 2019.

Andre Russell on his retirement:
While Andre Russell was not at his best in recent IPL seasons, not many were expecting him to retire. And the West Indies star has now revealed the reason behind his decision. In a recent interview, Russell stated that he wanted to bow out of the game at a high point instead of waiting for his decline to become obvious.
"When I made this decision, I felt it was the best decision for me at this point. I don't want to fade out, I want to leave a legacy behind. I believe it's best to retire when people still say “why” rather than reaching a stage where they say, “okay, yeah, you should have retired three or four years ago," said Andre Russell.
While Russell has retired from IPL, his association with Kolkata Knight Riders is set to continue. The franchise has announced Russell as their 'power coach' ahead of IPL 2026. He will be a part of a new-look support staff that will be headed by new head coach Abhishek Nayar. Tim South will be the bowling coach while Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo will be assistant coach and mentor respectively.
Andre Russell's IPL career in numbers:
Andre Russell bowed out of the IPL as one of the league's most celebrated players. He is one of the only two players in the history of IPL to score more than 2000 runs and take 100 wickets. Overall, he played 133 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders and scored 2593 runs including 12 fifties and maintained a strike-rate of almost 175. With the ball, Russell picked up 122 wickets.
