India’s new white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma said that to win an ICC tournament will be a challenge for the team. India hasn’t won any ICC trophy since their 2013 ICC Champions Trophy title against host England in their own backyard.

Since then the ‘Men in Blue’ have come close to many semi-finals like in the 2015 (World Cup), 2016 (T20 World Cup) and 2019 (World Cup).

India also lost to their arch-rivals Pakistan by 180 runs in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final in London. Even in the recent T20 World Cup in UAE, for the first time, India failed to qualify for the semi-final stage since 2012.

We couldn’t get that extra inch to win ICC tournaments: Rohit Sharma

Rohit defended the Indian team and said they didn’t put any wrong step in their quest to win an ICC title but just couldn’t get the extra inch.

The last ICC trophy we won was in 2013. Since then we haven’t won but I don’t [think] we did anything wrong after that Champions Trophy. We played as a team, performed as a team, it’s just that we couldn’t get that extra inch that we always look forward to. That can happen, you know, international cricket is very demanding,” Rohit was quoted as saying by BCCI TV.

“But that is the challenge. We are all professionals and we need to put the right step forward and make sure that we try and count and put all those things in the right bag,” he further added.

There’s a process that we need to follow to win championships: Rohit Sharma

The next decade is schedule packed for ICC as every year there is at least one ICC tournament including the 2023 World Cup that will be staged in India itself.

Rohit said the team will definitely focus on winning the ICC tournaments but will have to first stick to the process that is required to achieve it.

Yeah, there are a lot of World Cups coming up and India will definitely be eyeing to do well in all those World Cups for sure. Our focus, yes of course we have to win championships but there’s a process that we need to follow as a group because you know, if you want to win the championships there are a lot of other things that you need to first take care of then focus on the end goal,” Rohit said.

“Again, from me, the message to the boys will be to not think about the finals and all of that, just focus on the process which is important, to keep ticking the small boxes that are in front of us and then we’ll look at what’s our end goal,” he added.

Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as India’s ODI captain as the BCCI felt that the former should have complete control over the white-ball cricket affairs.
