The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made an interesting move during their ongoing three-match Test series against the Pakistan National Cricket Team. Five players from the first Test squad have been forced to play in the County Championship with the game at Headingley still going on.
The England National Cricket Team is currently facing the Pakistan National Cricket Team in the three-match Test series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The first Test is being played at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds starting Wednesday, August 19. Earlier, Harry Brook dethrones Travis Head to become World No. 1 Test batter, Rishabh Pant rises.
ECB sends 5 England players back to County Cricket
After England’s new full-time Test captain Joe Root confirmed his playing XI for the ongoing three-match Test series opener against Pakistan at Headingley, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has released the five players from the squad immediately.
Those five players are the off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, fast bowlers Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, and Matthew Fisher, and seasoned batter Ollie Pope. All five were part of England’s squad for the first Test against Pakistan but were not selected in the playing XI.
They will return to their English county teams and get valuable match practice instead of warming the bench with the national side at Headingley, as the next round of the County Championship will get underway on Thursday, August 20, across the United Kingdom.
Why have England released the players?
This is a very common thing in English cricket and by the ECB. The first England vs. Pakistan Test is being played at Headingley. At the same time, the next round of the County Championship starts on Thursday. Since the five players are not playing in the Test, the ECB asked them to be available for their county teams.
This gives the players a chance to stay fit and continue playing competitive cricket instead of sitting on the bench for five days. It is also useful for England because the County Championship is first-class cricket. So, if they manage to perform excellently, they might be considered for the second Test. Amid this, Mark Wood admits hating Stuart Broad’s ‘celebrappeal’.
Surrey gets two England players
Surrey will benefit the most from the ECB’s move, as they will have Matthew Fisher and Ollie Pope available for their important match against Nottinghamshire at The Oval in London.
Both players will be looking to make the most of the opportunity and put themselves in a strong position before England's next Test. Pope, in particular, will be eager to get some valuable time in the middle after missing out on the playing XI.
Shoaib Bashir and Brydon Carse to face each other
The Derbyshire vs Durham clash in the County Championship will see the battle between Shoaib Bashir and Brydon Carse at the County Cricket Ground in Derby.
Bashir will represent Derbyshire, while Carse will turn out for Durham. This gives both players an excellent chance to stay match-ready while also helping their respective counties.
Sam Cook returns for Essex
Sam Cook will join Essex for their County Championship match against Somerset at the County Cricket Ground in Taunton. Cook has already played 99 First-Class matches and taken 355 wickets.
