New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult created a record in Test cricket on the second day of the second Test against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday (June 11). To be very clear, Boutl achieved the record with the bat this time.

Boult extended support to Daryl Mitchell to score his first double-hundred in the red-ball format. Boult scored 16 runs in 18 deliveries to hang around the crease while Mitchell was busy marvelling at the English bowling attack.

Mitchell was unfortunate to miss on a double ton as he nicked one behind the stumps off Matthew Potts and ended his 190 from 318 balls with 23 boundaries and four sixes. In the course of his brief stay at the crease, Boult levelled former Sri Lankan player Muttiah Muralitharan’s record of scoring the most runs at No.11 in Test cricket.

Had Mitchell carried to chase the 200-run mark, Boult could have those bragging rights to attain the record on the second day itself. Nevertheless, Boult will have the opportunity in the same Test to overhaul the 623 runs record of Muralitharan.

Just for the fact, Boult achieved the feat in 78 Test innings while the Sri Lankan spin wizard took 98 innings to amass the same number of runs. Boult also surpassed his counterpart and England’s highest Test wicket-taker James Anderson on the list. Anderson has scored 609 runs in 164 innings at an average of 8.12. Boult has overall scored 738 runs in 91 innings with the best score of 52 not out, batting at No.11, against Bangladesh.

Coming back to the second Test, New Zealand finished in a commanding position with 553. Boult dismissed England opener, Zak Crawley, on 4, bowling a scrambled seam delivery, which the batter nicked to Tom Blundell behind the wickets.

Alex Lees (34) and Ollie Pope ensured the Black Caps did not cause any damage further on Day 2 as England finished at 90/1, trailing by 463 runs behind New Zealand in the first innings.
