In the ever-changing landscape of cricket, we are witnessing franchise cricket at its peak. Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt feels that ICC should stop giving status to leagues. Salman Butt pointed out that the local players of a board aren’t capable of playing in leagues.

In the major development of franchise cricket, USA’s Major League cricket is set to commence on 14th July and we should not forget that 3 IPL franchises: MI, CSK & KKR have their teams as we can expect good contests between bat & ball.

There is no doubt that the rising leagues are a threat to bilaterals in both ODI & T20Is. The boards will have to either give extra incentives to the players for not abandoning national duty else try out new players.

ICC should fix tiers for leagues to decide which players will play… – Salman Butt

Salman Butt was seen speaking on his YouTube channel and was quite furious at ICC for giving status to leagues and said that a particular board’s players don’t have the domestic talent and still they are conducting a league.

“Countries that don’t even have a single team of their own and expatriates complete their teams are bound to conduct leagues filled with overseas players. Their own players aren’t capable of playing because they don’t meet the required standards,” said Salman Butt.

“Instead of debating about having a cap on foreign players, the ICC should think of not giving leagues to everybody. There should be only a certain number of leagues in a year. They should fix tiers for leagues to decide which players will play where,” he stated.

Former Pakistani skipper Salman Butt further added that there should be a number of leagues in a year. Salman Butt pointed out that every league should not be for every player.

“There should be only a certain number of leagues in a year. They should fix tiers for leagues to decide which players will play where. All the leagues cannot have the same status. Every league should not be for every player,” said Salman Butt.

It looks unlikely that league status would be changed as recently ICC has also given status to the Major League Cricket as the league is set to commence in July. We witnessed how a flurry of leagues took place at the same time in January 2023-March 2023 as there was non-stop cricketing action.
