A former county cricket coach has received a nine-month suspension after admitting to sending sexually explicit messages and images to two junior female staff members. The incident sparked concern within the cricket community, raising questions about safeguarding and professional conduct in the sport.

Cricket authorities have been working to create a safer environment, especially for junior staff and players, by reinforcing standards. This recent case highlights the sport’s commitment to accountability, emphasizing that misconduct will not be tolerated, regardless of an individual’s status or experience.

The incidents took place during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Following an investigation, the Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP) imposed the suspension, with six months to be served immediately and the remaining three months suspended. The coach has also been ordered to complete a mandatory course.

Although the misconduct was serious, the panel chose not to disclose the coach’s identity, citing exceptional health concerns and the risk of serious harm if his name were made public. He was dismissed over the incidents and has not held a position in cricket since.

Former County Coach Sanctioned for Inappropriate Conduct Toward Junior Female Staff

The disciplinary panel found that the former county cricket coach engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior with two junior female colleagues, including sending explicit messages and images.

One woman received sexual messages, which briefly stopped after she objected, only for him to send another inappropriate message days later. The second woman, who was much younger and held a more junior role, was also sent explicit photos.

The coach later worked with a former professional athlete to better understand the harm caused by such behavior and completed training on sexual harassment and professional boundaries.

Cricket Regulator Managing Director Condemns Sexual Misconduct

Cricket regulator managing director Chris Haward called the coach’s actions completely unacceptable. Haward emphasized that eliminating sexual misconduct from the sport remains a top priority. He assured that all such cases, including those from the past or present, would be thoroughly investigated.

"Where such instances are identified they will be investigated and those responsible will be held to account. Removing sexual misconduct from the game is a priority for the cricket regulator," Haward said.

"We recognise that it takes a lot of courage for those impacted to come forward. We are committed to investigating thoroughly and expeditiously when allegations are raised with us, whether current or in the past," Haward added.

Misconduct can occur in any sport, but there is a need for stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals in professional environments.
