Explained: How Pakistan can still qualify for Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2024?

Pakistan cricket team has now lost two back-to-back games in the T20 World Cup 2024 with losses to the USA and India. They lost to India by six runs in New York as they failed to chase down 120.

Pakistan fell short by six runs as they reached 113/7 and lost the game from a potentially winning position. They were well placed before the fall of Mohammad Rizwan's wicket to chase down the target. However, Jasprit Bumrajh's wicket to Rizwan opened up the gates for India.

There was a spell of 36 deliveries where Pakistan did not manage to hit boundaries which added pressure to them while chasing. Meanwhile, this loss has added more pressure to Pakistan's qualification chances now for the Super 8s.

Pakistan who were the finalists of the last T20 World Cup were outplayed in both the games they played so far. Against India, despite their bowling bowling so well and almost setting up the match for the batters, the batters failed to handle the pressure. They crumbled under pressure in the chae with 30-odd runs needed from the final five or six overs.

Now with two more games remaining, Pakistan face a must-win situation in their final two Group stage games. They face Canada next on June 11. Canada have already beaten Ireland and on their day can even beat Pakistan. Ireland recently beat them in a bilateral T20I series and can challenge them in the next match as well.

Apart from winning their final two group games, Pakistan needs a few other results to go their way if they are seeking to make the Super 8s. First, they need India to win their final two group games.  Secondly, they need the USA to lose to Ireland and Canada which will then give Pakistan a chance to beat them and become the second team from Group A to make it to the Super 8s.

At this stage, the USA and India have won their two games. Ireland have lost to India and Canada. Canada's win over Ireland have kept them alive in the Group. If they manage to beat Pakistan, then the Men in Green are out of the tournament. So Pakistan not only needs to win but win big.

If Pakistan wins their next two games, India will qualify for the Super 8s directly. Pakistan and the USA will be tied on two points and then the Net Run Rate will come into the picture. The loss to India has hurt Pakistan's NRR as well.

As of now, India is topping Group A with an NRR of +1.455. The USA is placed second with an NRR of +0.626. Canada, Ireland, and Pakistan have all their NRRs in negative.

Pakistan next plays against Canada on June 11 and against Ireland on June 16.
