In a tragic loss for India and Karnataka cricket, veteran Karnataka cricketer B Vijayakrishna passed away at a private hospital in the state on Thursday following a multiple organ failure and cardiac arrest.

Born on October 12, 1949, B Vijayakrishna began his cricketing journey under the tutelage of former cricketer K Nagabhushan in the 1960s.

Vijayakrishna made his Ranji Trophy debut against Hyderabad in 1968 and he instantly left his mark with a three-wicket-haul.

A part of Karnataka’s twin Ranji Trophy triumphs in the 1970s [1973/74 and 1977/78], B Vijayakrishna was one of the bedrocks of the Karnataka state team in the 1970s and 80s.

He went on to represent Karnataka in 80 First-Class matches, claiming 194 wickets besides scoring 2297 runs with two centuries.

Vijayakrishna, 71, was admitted to hospital two days ago due to health complications and breathed his last on Friday.

Following his unfortunate demise, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa paid tribute to B Vijayakrishna, stating that the veteran cricketer was responsible for Karnataka winning Ranji Trophy twice.

“In his 15-year career as an allrounder, he played 80 first-class matches in which he scored over 2,000 runs and took 194 wickets. In his death, we have lost a great cricketer. May his soul rest in peace,” Yediyurappa said in a statement.
