Punjab Kings are all set for an overhaul once again heading into IPL 2025. The franchise is all set to release Trevor Bayliss as the head coach and is looking for an Indian coach to replace him. There are reports that Wasim Jaffer is a favorite to join the franchise as the next head coach.
There is Sanjay Bangar already who is associated with the franchise as their head of cricket operations. Over the years, Punjab Kings have changed their coach and captain but nothing has resulted in anything positive. They have made the final just once in 2014 and have not made it to the IPL playoffs since then.
As per reports, Punjab Kings co-owner Nessa Wadia was involved in a heated exchange with KKR boss Shahrukh Khan in the recent meeting held between the IPL franchise owners and the BCCI on the roadmap for IPL 2025.
The Kings finished ninth on the table with five wins and nine losses. Their most remarkable achievement came in the match against KKR where they chased 262 to win an IPL record chase.
Several franchises have asked for the mega auctions to be scrapped and also the Impact player rule to be scrapped as well. Teams are in favor of mini auctions and at least 7 to 8 retentions as it allows the franchises to retain much of the core of the side.
Almost all franchises have unanimously asked the BCCI to ban overseas players for two years if they do not turn up to play the season after enrolling themselves for the mega auction. Overall a few changes are expected in the IPL 2025 mega auction and in this article, we look at three overseas players PBKS might release.
Overseas Players Punjab Kings (PBKS) Will Release Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Jonny Bairstow
Bairstow has not been at his best playing for the Punjab Kings. The England keeper-batsman has scored 551 runs in 22 matches for the Kings at a strike rate of almost 150.
Barring his match-winning century against KKR earlier this year, Bairstow has been largely off-color throughout the tournament. With the team looking to rebuild, they might release the out-of-form currently out of favor Bairstow.
Chris Woakes
Another England all-rounder Chris Woakes did not get to play any matches for the Kings in IPL 2024. He warmed the bench throughout IPL 2024.
In the recent Test series against West Indies, Woakes was back at his best. With him not being up there with the top all-rounders in world T20 cricket at the moment, Woakes might be released by Punjab Kings.
Matthew Short
The Australian all-rounder Matt Short might be the third overseas player released by the Kings. Short was signed as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow in IPL 2023. However, he was not as impactful in the IPL as he was in the BBL.
He scored just 117 runs for the Kings in six matches and he remained wicketless with the ball. He scored his runs at a strike rate of just over 120 and did not create any impact with the bat as well.
