Gautam Gambhir again voiced against the superstar culture in Team India. The head coach of Team India stated that every member in the squad is equally important to him. The former cricketer’s vision is to create a ‘super team’, rather than producing a ‘superstar player’.

Soon after winning the T20 World Cup 2026, a few comments of Gambhir went viral on social media platforms. He said that he prefers only those players who wish to go for a boundary on the next ball for the team’s benefit, over personal milestones.

Gautam Gambhir wishes to create a 'Super Team'

During a recent interview with ANI, the coach sounded the same. Without mentioning any individual, he claimed that personal records, social media following, and TRP are not the parameters for selection in the national camp.

“I don't look at the amount of runs they've got, I don't look at the amount of social media following they have, I don't look at what TRP they bring to the people or to the broadcaster I only look at that what they bring to the team and what they bring to the country and that is why I feel that that is my job is to create a super team and hopefully till I finish my tenure I will be able to create a super team”, Gautam Gambhir expressed.

“Media wants to create superstars, but my job as a head coach is to create a super team, and that's the only way I look at my profession because my job is to be absolutely fair, even, and treat everyone exactly equally because those 15 people in the dressing room are absolutely equal to me”, he also said in the interview.

Gambhir got an ample amount of success as the head coach of Team India

Gautam Gambhir was appointed head coach of the Indian men's cricket team in July 2024, signing a three-year contract running until the 2027 ODI World Cup. With another year in hand under the contract, the 44-year-old guided the team to claim the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, 2025 Asia Cup, and 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Before the tournament, the coach had to deal with a series of criticisms regarding the team selection process. Under Gambhir’s observations, there were a lot of experiments to find the best possible squad. Shuffling batting positions, an all-rounder-heavy playing eleven is among the few hallmarks of Gautam Gambhir’s Team India.

T20 World Cup 2026 title without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Critics put a finger to their lips as soon as the Men in Blue claimed the T20 World Cup 2026 title, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the Final match in Ahmedabad. Without the superstars like the former skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both retired from T20 Internationals, it is considered a massive achievement for the team.

Former cricketer Irfan Pathan openly praised Gambhir for believing in his vision, despite contestant backlashed, to shape the team in a new look.
