Former Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir wants to see off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lead Delhi Capitals in next season.
Ashwin picked seven wickets in IPL 2021 and was very close to pushing Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2021 final.
Ashwin was handed the final over to bowl against Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 2 where he had the task of defending seven runs.
He got two wickets in two balls before he was tonked by Rahul Tripathi for a six over long-off on the penultimate ball of the match.
Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best spinners in the world: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir said Ashwin is one of the best spinners in the world and wants him to be the captain of DC in IPL 2022.
“Look, I’m one of his biggest fans and he’s one of the best spinners in the world. So, yes, it may be a bizarre call and only I can think about this… but I would like to make him the captain of Delhi Capitals next year, Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.
I would never have Ravichandran Ashwin in my team: Sanjay Manjrekar
Cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar had a contrary view about the Tamil Nadu spinner.
The former Indian player is of the opinion that Ashwin hasn’t changed as a bowler in T20 cricket since the last five years and he would prefer spinners like Varun Chakravarthy or Sunil Narine in his team.
“We have spent far too much talking about Ashwin. As a T20 bowler, he is not a great force in any team. And if you want Ashwin to change, I don’t think that’s going to happen because he’s been like this for the last five-seven years.”
“I think he has shown us in the last five years that he’s bowled exactly the same and I would never have somebody like Ashwin in my team because if I got turning pitches, I would expect to have people like Varun Chakravarthy or Sunil Narine or [Yuzvendra] Chahal and how they do their job. They get you wickets.”
Ashwin was the captain of Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for two seasons before moving to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020.
