Former India fielding coach R Sridhar revealed that one-time India head coach and Australia batting legend Greg Chappell was astonished at how the Indian team came back to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 after being bowled out for 36 in the first Test of the series in Adelaide and called Ravi Shastri to congratulate the team’s efforts.

The Indian team has kind of made a habit of coming back in winning ways after being seemingly dead and buried. Sridhar was part of the Indian coaching staff when they were bowled out for their lowest Test score of 36 and then when they were routed for 78 at Leeds against England recently. Sridhar explained that challenging days like Adelaide and Leeds allowed him to understand the Indian team and players better.

Both times, the Indian team roared back in action and won the next Test match in incredible fashion.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to learn. To me, as a coach, a bad day is a great coaching opportunity. Good days are not great coaching opportunities but bad days are. When I say coaching opportunity, it’s about understanding the person, striking a nice relationship with the players, an opportunity to coach them technically and mentally if required,” Sridhar told PTI.

“You get to know about player and team. Basically, how you are on your bad day, says what you are as a team. This team was outstanding in terms of resilience,” he added.

Indian team looked in a good position in their first-ever day/night Test against and in Australia in Adelaide. They made 244 in the 1st innings and then bowled out Australia for 191. However, in what can only be called a horror second innings, India was bowled out for 36, which is their lowest Test score ever and resulted in an 8-wicket loss.

However, India, who had also lost captain Virat Kohli’s services, as he flew back to India for the birth of his daughter, came back big time, beating Australia in Melbourne by 8 wickets under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. India then held on for a miraculous draw in Sydney and then created history by beating the home team in Brisbane for the first time since 1988 and pocketed their second consecutive Test series in Australia.

Sridhar revealed that Australia batting great Greg Chappell called up Ravi Shastri to share his astonishment at the Indian team’s comeback and congratulated everyone.

“Recently, Greg Chappell called up and asked Ravi Bhai, ‘How the hell do you bounce back after so many losses?’ That’s a benchmark for this team. Every bad day was harnessed like a gold mine,” Sridhar revealed.
