Pakistan Cricket Team had a topsy-turvy ODI Series against New Zealand. The Men in Green weren’t able to capitalize on the 1-0 lead where they lacked the intent. Pakistan had a great chance to stake a claim in the World Test Championship (WTC 2021-23) final but they weren’t that competitive against England.
According to the reports, it is assumed that Babar Azam would be removed from the captaincy post and there would be split captaincy. There are chances that Sarfaraz Ahmed would be handed the reins of Test Cricket after a terrific comeback against New Zealand.
Haroon Rasheed New Chief Selector
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sacked the interim chief selector Shahid Afridi who was appointed for the New Zealand tour. Haroon Rasheed, the former batter earlier had served as the chief selector from 2015- 2016. He played 23 Tests and 12 ODIs between 1977 & 1983. He will step down from the PCB Management Committee and take this role.
Conundrum For Pakistan
PCB is yet to announce the new Head Coach and along with that, some reports suggest that there might be a change in the coaching setup as well. With less than a year left for ODI World Cup 2023, the selection committee should not make wholesale changes as it changes the team’s dynamics.
Pakistan now is scheduled to play PSL starting in February. Pakistani fans would be hoping that the team ends the drought of 31 years. The selection panel would be keen on finding match winners which have been missing in their setup. It would be interesting to see whether Pakistan host the Asia Cup 2023 as that event would be quite pivotal leading up to the marquee event.
