England National Cricket Team is all set to start a fresh chapter in white-ball cricket. As per the reports in the Telegraph, it is learned that Harry Brook is all set to take over the leadership of the team in the T20I format, while Ben Stokes could get captaincy of the team in the ODIs.
The England National Cricket Team came in the hunt for the skipper white-ball team after Jos Buttler stepped down as captain of the team after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The keeper-batter resigned after the team faced a group-stage exit in the tournament.

Since then, the ECB has been looking at the potential candidates, and Harry Brook, who is vice-captain, emerged as a prime contender. However, the governing body is keen to give him leadership only in the T20Is as they want to prepare him for the T20 World Cup 2026.
The reports claimed that both Ben Stokes and Harry Brook are open to taking over the responsibility of the team in ODIs. The England and Wales Cricket Board are confused about the same as they are yet to finalize their choice in the 50-over cricket.
If Harry Brook gets the ODI captaincy then he would have a huge workload and responsibility across the three formats. As for Ben Stokes, the ECB is worried about his fitness as he is currently recovering from a second serious hamstring injury in a short period. Also, his lack of recent white-ball experience has been talked about.

England’s next white-ball fixtures are in June against West Indies. The Three Lions will be playing three ODIs and three T20Is, and till then, they have a lot of time to decide. Ben Stokes' fitness no doubt will play a key role in getting him the captaincy in the 50-over format.

Whoever will take the role will have to do a massive job because England, since last year, have struggled big time in white-ball cricket. They faced the group stage exit in the ICC World Cup 2023 and also failed to win a single game in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They were also thrashed by India in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
