I Feel Like We Are Trending In The Right Direction – Usman Khawaja Reacts To Pat Cummins' Decision To Hold Champagne Shower

“Feel like we are trending in the right direction,” said Australia batsman Usman Khawaja reacting to Pat Cummins’ decision to hold the champagne shower so that he could join the team for the celebrations.

Australia won the marquee Ashes 2021-22 series by 4-0 against England. Australia started the domination by winning the match by 9 wickets at the Gabba, they won the second game by 275 runs at the Adelaide Oval, third game by an innings and 14 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the fourth match ended in a draw at Sydney Cricket Ground, and the Pat Cummins and co. won the last match by 146 runs at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

After the series win, Australian players were set to do their champagne shower celebrations and Usman Khawaja being a Muslim cricketer was not a part of it as he wanted to avoid being sprayed with the alcohol. However, skipper Cummins asked his teammates to stop the champagne spraying so that Usman Khawaja could join the team for the celebrations.

The Australia batsman Khawaja who made a comeback after a very long time in the Test side smashed back-to-back centuries in the Sydney Test and he was given the opening slot for the Ashes finale.

Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja took to Twitter to praise his teammates for stopping their champagne celebrations so that he could join them.

“If this video doesn’t show you that the boys have my back, I don’t know what will. They stopped their normal champagne celebrations so I could rejoin. Inclusivity in the game and our values as a sport are so important. I feel like we are trending in the right direction,” Khawaja tweeted.

Also, Australia Test captain Pat Cummins talking about his gesture had said:

“Usman is obviously Muslim, so he doesn’t like the champagne being thrown, I just made sure he got up there and no champagne was thrown.”
