Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is willing to “do anything” to ensure he keeps a place in India‘s T20 World Cup squad. The right-hander is set to return to the high-level cricket with the UAE leg of the IPL, after missing the first half of the season due to an injury.

Shreyas Iyer sustained a dislocated shoulder during an ODI against England in March and had to undergo surgery in the United Kingdom. He missed the India leg of the IPL – Rishabh Pant was given the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals – and also the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka.

In his absence, the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan made most of their opportunities. Shreyas Iyer, however, says that his competition is with himself, that his aim is to improve his own game and not focus on others.

“It’s a great opportunity, especially after coming back from an injury to play in the IPL. After that the World Cup. These are the two biggest tournaments for an Indian cricketer to play at. We have always dreamed of being part of such an amazing time,” Shreyas Iyer told Sports Today.

“It’s you vs you always. And I don’t compare myself to others. Obviously, there are many players who are there to take my position and there is so much competition but if I look at my performance in the last few years, it has been awesome.

“I just want to keep going beyond my abilities. Everyday I am looking to become the best version of myself. I will do anything to be in the team and make sure my team wins. That’s my mindset at this point of time,” he added.

The 26-year-old will have only the remainder of the IPL season to prove his form and fitness once again ahead of the T20 World Cup. The right-hander stressed that his tough time dealing with the injury has motivated him and he is eager to step on the field again.

“All these moments… the last four months. It has basically fuelled and propelled my mindset to keep working harder and smarter. No rest days for me at this point of time. Really looking forward to the matches which I am going to play right now,” he said.

It remains to be seen if the Capitals reinstate Shreyas Iyer as the captain after Pant had led the side brilliantly to the top of the table in the first half of the season.
