Ian Bishop rattles KKR fans with Gautam Gambhir jibe after IPL 2024 title win

Legendary West Indian pacer and well-known commentator Ian Bishop was not pleased with the way the cricket world was singing praise for Gautam Gambhir for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) successful campaign in the IPL 2024.

Almost every second cricket enthusiast is giving credit to KKR mentor Gambhir for the Men in Purple and Gold's third IPL title triumph, overshadowing captain Shreyas Iyer’s contributions to the team's success.

Given that, Bishop sent a strong message to the cricket fraternity on-air during the IPL 2024 Final between KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the Men in Purple and Gold won the game by 8 wickets to lift the prestigious cup on Sunday, May 26.

Shreyas Iyer's captaincy underappreciated in KKR's IPL 2024 success: Ian Bishop

The legendary cricketer lashed out at the people who are not recognizing Iyer’s exceptional captaincy, saying the KKR skipper is one of the key reasons behind the team’s success this season. Bishop mentioned that Iyer’s captaincy is understated by the people and is not getting the hype and credit that he deserved for leading the KKR to the IPL 2024 title triumph.

He believes that apart from Iyer, KKR’s coaching staff, including head coach Chandrakant Pundit, assistant and batting coach Abhishek Nayar, bowling coach Bharat Arun, and fielding coach Ryan ten Doeschate, deserves equal credit for the team having a dreamy IPL season this year.

Although Iyer didn't have his best season with the bat, scoring only 351 runs in 14 group stage matches, his leadership was just amazing for the KKR. As captain, the Indian batter guided KKR to nine victories in 14 league matches in the IPL 2024. His strategic decisions and effective bowler rotations, especially during the IPL 2024 playoffs, played a crucial role in KKR's success this season.

Ian Bishop said on commentary during the IPL 2024 Final: “I want to input my own sort of balance to this team (KKR) and that guy, Shreyas Iyer. I’ve been hearing a lot about Gautam Gambhir, who has created a magnificent culture in this KKR team. But, this guy Shreyas, I don’t think he’s getting enough credit.”

Bishop added, “I’ve been saying it all season, and they came after me in social media. And not to forget, the bowling of KKR, I think that is understated. So, I just wanted to get that out there. So, these two (Gambhir and coaches) and Shreyas Iyer need some credit.”

The former West Indies cricketer also congratulated KKR on winning their third IPL title after thrashing the SRH by 8 wickets in the IPL 2024 Final in Chennai on Sunday. He also lauded the SRH for making the IPL 2024 a spectacular season with their aggressive batting.
