The Pakistan national cricket team suffered a double shock after the humiliating 104-run defeat against the Bangladesh national cricket team in the first Test in Dhaka. After the loss, the International Cricket Council (ICC) also delivered another brutal blow to the Pakistani team.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (101 and 87) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana—both taking 6 wickets each—helped the Bangladesh national cricket team to outclass the Pakistan team at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka by 104 runs.
It was Bangladesh’s first win of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle and Pakistan’s third loss from four games so far.
ICC punishes Pakistan after Bangladesh humiliation
The ICC has now punished the Pakistan national cricket team for maintaining a slow over-rate during the Dhaka Test against Bangladesh. They were found two overs short of the required target after all allowances were taken into account, and the result has turned into a nightmare for the touring side.

The governing body fined the Pakistan players 40% of their match fees. Additionally, the Pakistan national cricket team lost eight crucial ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points after the slow over-rate offense. This penalty has now badly damaged Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the WTC final.
Following the sanction, Pakistan has now only four points in the WTC 2025-27 points table, and they are sitting eighth, just above West Indies. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and India are the top five teams in the standings.
Shan Masood accepts ICC charges after slow over-rate offence
The punishment was handed out by Jeff Crowe from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. On the other hand, the on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, alongside third umpire Allahuddien Palekar and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel, imposed the charges on Pakistan.
The ICC said in an official statement: “Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time.

As per Article 16.11.2 of the World Test Championship playing conditions, teams lose one championship point for each over short, resulting in Pakistan being docked eight crucial points in the WTC standings. Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.”
Pakistan eye strong comeback in Sylhet as Bangladesh suffer big injury blow
Meanwhile, the second and final WTC Test will be played from May 16 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, and Shan Masood’s team must be hoping to make a strong comeback to level the Test series and get those crucial WTC points.
On the other hand, Bangladesh suffered a massive injury blow, as their star opener Shadman Islam was ruled out of the second and final Test against Pakistan after injuring his chest during the first Test while attempting a catch in Dhaka. The hosts have named Zakir Hasan as Shadman’s replacement in the squad for the Sylhet Test.
