England, on Sunday (October 19), beat India by 4 runs in a thrilling game to qualify for the semifinals of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025. They became the third team, Australia and South Africa, to book their spot in the next round of the tournament.
Batting first, England posted a big total of 288/8 in the allotted 50 overs thanks to a brilliant century from their former captain Heather Knight. In reply, India came up with a valiant effort but eventually fell short as they finished on 284/6.
With three semifinal slots already taken, the other five teams, including India, will now fight it out for the remaining one spot. The other teams in contention for the semifinals are New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
Here is the points table of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025:

Pakistan | 5 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 2 | -1.887 |
With the race for the remaining one semifinal spot heating up, we are taking a look at what the five teams need to progress ahead of the league stage.
ICC Women's World Cup 2025 - Qualification scenario:
India:
Matches remaining - New Zealand, Bangladesh
India were one of the favorites to win the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, but their campaign is in danger of getting completely derailed after three straight losses. They started their campaign with wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan before losing to South Africa, Australia, and England.
While India have their back against the wall, they are still in a strong position to qualify for the next round. They will be entering the semifinals if they beat New Zealand and Bangladesh in their remaining games. Even if they beat New Zealand in their next game, they will be all but assured of a place in the top four.
If the win against New Zealand is followed by a shock loss against Bangladesh, India will qualify if they manage to stay ahead on net-run rate.
In case India lost to New Zealand but beat Bangladesh, they would qualify if England beat the White Ferns before that. In that case, India would qualify on the virtue of more wins.
New Zealand Women:
Matches remaining: India, England
Out of all the five teams, New Zealand arguably have the toughest fixtures. They will be facing India and England in their remaining league games. Their next game against India is virtually a knockout. New Zealand also have their fate in their own hands. They will qualify for the next round if they win their remaining matches.
On the other hand, a defeat to India will put an end to their journey in the ICC Women's World Cup 2025. At the same time, they will progress to the semifinals if they beat India but lose to England in their final league game.
In the second scenario, they would want Sri Lanka to beat Bangladesh and then the latter to register an unlikely win over India.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan:
Matches remaining for Bangladesh: Sri Lanka, India
Matches remaining for Sri Lanka: Bangladesh, Pakistan
Matches remaining for Pakistan: South Africa, Sri Lanka
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan are occupying the bottom three spots in the points table and all of them are in a must-win territory. The loser of the upcoming match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will become the first team to be knocked out of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025.
Bangladesh will be qualifying for the next round if they win their remaining two games and New Zealand beat India before losing to England. In that case, both Bangladesh and New Zealand will finish on six points but the former will qualify on the virtue of more wins.
In case, India beat New Zealand, Bangladesh will have to register a big win over Sri Lanka to improve their net run-rate. They will be facing India in their final league game and it will make the equation straightforward for them.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan's chances of qualifying for the next round are extremely low. One of these two teams can finish with a maximum of six points. Even that would not be enough for a place in the next round.
They do not have their fate in their own hands anymore. Both of them will be knocked out if India beat New Zealand.
