England all-rounder David Willey is a key cog in England’s white-ball formation but is still without a central contract. After missing the 2019 World Cup, he has been named in the provisional squad for the  2023 World Cup in India. His all-round skills and his experience of playing in Indian conditions give him the edge for selection.

Willey was replaced by Jofra Archer in the last minute with the England pacer moving up the ranks quickly then. Archer, the England speedster, has not been a regular member of the team for more than two years now because of an elbow injury.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Willey opened up on his snub from the 2019 World Cup winning squad and him being named in England’s provisional squad for the ODI World Cup 2023.

Delighted To Be Picked This Time: David Willey After Being Picked For WC Probable Squad

“Four years ago, sat there watching the lads lift the trophy, complete mixed emotions. I’d have given my left arm to have been there and part of it. I’m absolutely delighted to be picked this time around,” Willey said.

The England all-rounder then spoke about his financial condition and how the other players in his position are getting paid better than him. He is currently on an incremental contract from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

“I’ve played for England for eight years – I think I’ve had one central contract. It’s probably highly likely I’ll go to a World Cup and have to think through things over the next 12 months and not have an England contract. It’s difficult,” Willey stated on not getting a central contract.

He further spoke regarding his longevity as an England cricketer if he does not get a central contract sooner rather than later.

“The bottom line is look if I’m carrying on with no recognition in terms of an England central contract it probably is going to be a decision before too long that actually you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines, haven’t you? So I’d then have to start thinking about myself and my family first,” Willey concluded saying.
