Gary Kirsten allowed us to practice as we wanted – Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag was having an interaction with the media and recalled how the then-head coach Gary Kirsten used to work with the team members. Virender Sehwag pointed out that Rahul Dravid will have a huge role in identifying things in a bid to get the best out of his players.

“The good thing in our time was Gary Kirsten allowed us to practice as we wanted. It is not important that Virender Sehwag plays like Sachin Tendulkar and faces a lot of deliveries,” said Virender Sehwag.

“So to identify that, will be important for the Indian team management and their staff. So Rahul Dravid will have a big role in identifying these aspects like who should practice how much, who needs breaks and how I can get the best out of my players.”

Coach’s respect is in the hands of a player – Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag said that India reached the final of WTC final and yet no one is talking about head coach Rahul Dravid. Virender Sehwag made it clear that Rahul Dravid would be given credit if the player performs.

“Because once a player gets on to the field, the coach’s respect is in the hands of the player. So if he plays well, the coach will be praised and if that doesn’t happen, the coach will be criticized,” said Virender Sehwag.

“We reached the final of the WTC and no one is talking about reaching the final being a big achievement and that too back-to-back. Everyone is talking about the loss,” he added.

“Rahul Dravid has been a great coach and a player, but at the end of the day, he can’t go and play. If the player performs well, then Dravid will be praised. The coach doesn’t make anyone,” he stated.

“The coach is made by the player, like we made Gary Kirsten at the 2011 World Cup by winning it. Kirsten has gone to many other places and hasn’t won anything after that, except the IPL with GT and that also he had Nehra with him,” he added.
