Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach Ricky Ponting shared his thoughts on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni's IPL future amid ongoing retirement speculation. The former Australia captain stated that the veteran is still sharp behind the stumps, especially while standing up to spinners, in the IPL 2025 season.

Dhoni has come under scrutiny this season, with critics and even some loyal CSK fans questioning his position in the batting order. Discussions around Dhoni’s future have intensified following CSK's inconsistent performances. Notably, the veteran has been above criticism throughout his IPL career.

MS Dhoni's Keeping Is Not Getting Any Worse - Ricky Ponting

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ricky Ponting dismissed concerns over MS Dhoni’s form, adding that the former India captain remains sharp behind the stumps. He also pointed out that CSK has long-standing success with Dhoni’s leadership.

"Well, his keeping is not getting any worse, that's one thing I do know; he's not missing many standing up to the stumps against the spinners, as good as ever. Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do, they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history," Ponting said.

"They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers within their own right," he added.

It Might Just Depend on How This Season Goes - Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting said that MS Dhoni’s retirement will likely depend on how the veteran performs with the bat this season. Ponting noted that he still sees Dhoni as a threat in the IPL. He added that if Dhoni continues to make an impact, he may carry on playing.

"I guess he has played a slightly diminished role in the last couple of years, just coming in for the last 10-12 balls and trying to make a big impact. Dhoni is still dangerous in the IPL," Ponting continued.

"It might just depend on how this season goes. If he can have a real impact with the bat, I think he will keep playing. If his batting output drops, he might start thinking about it. He's been a terrific player for a long time," he added.

MS Dhoni’s Batting Struggles Continue in IPL 2025

MS Dhoni struggled to accelerate in a run chase during Chennai Super Kings’ recent 25-run loss to Delhi Capitals. The 43-year-old finished with an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls, including one six and one four.

Dhoni’s family was spotted at Chepauk during the Delhi match, which fueled retirement rumors. Notably, Dhoni came in to bat at No. 9 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, despite CSK being in deep trouble at 80/6.

However, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming defended the veteran, stating he “can’t bat 10 overs running full stick.” Fleming added that the former skipper is still going strong and made it clear that any decision regarding Dhoni’s future would be his own.

CSK will take on Punjab Kings in their next match in Mullanpur on April 8, hoping to bounce back from their recent dip in form.
