Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is expected to be fit for the must-win second Test against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi starting Friday, February 17. The left-arm fast bowler believes that he has a good chance to make his comeback in the longer format after recovering from a broken finger.

The Aussies lost the match by an innings and 132 runs in the opening match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023. Mitchell Starc missed the first Test in Nagpur due to an injury he suffered in late December. The 32-year-old stayed at home in Sydney rather than fly to India immediately, arriving on Saturday. He then met his teammates in Delhi on Tuesday night ahead of the second Test.

I’ll Do Everything I Can To Be Fully Available For Selection – Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc said that he would do everything to be fully available for selection for the crucial match. He admitted that the team management and medical staff would decide whether to play the match or not.

“I’d like to be a little further down the road. Still a good chance, so it’ll come down to how it reacts by the end of (Wednesday), how the medical staff see it, how the selectors and Pat (Cummins) and Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald) feel about it as well,” Starc said in Delhi on Wednesday.

“I’ll do everything I can to be fully available for selection, then it’s a discussion for the rest of the group involved. I don’t think (batting will be an issue) so it’s going to be uncomfortable, but I don’t think it’s an issue. I think I’ll still field with a cap on (the finger), that’s what I did in Melbourne (after he initially broke the finger)…I don’t field myself in slip anyway,” he said.

After the humiliating defeat, some changes are expected to be made in the Australian bowling department. Skipper Pat Cummins will lead the fast bowling attack, and Scott Boland is likely to make way for Mitchell Starc. There were no changes in the spin department, as debutant Todd Murphy took seven wickets. All-rounder Cameron Green is still a doubt, and star pacer Josh Hazlewood is unable to fit in time for the Test match.
