Former India batsman Kris Srikkanth took a dig at Tilak Varma and said that the 20-year-old should not be given a chance to debut in a big tournament.
The 20-year-old has been recently named in the 17-member Asia Cup 2023 and will be joining the rest of the squad in the training camp in Alur before the start of the upcoming Asia Cup.
The 20-year-old batsman made his T20I debut in the West Indies and displayed a stunning performance. However, Tilak Varma failed to make a mark in the three-match Ireland series and scored only one run in the first two games.
While speaking on his official YouTube channel, Srikkanth expressed the same point of view as Sourav Ganguly and said that Tilak Varma should not be given a chance to debut in a big tournament and that he should play a few ODI matches first.
“Tilak Varma, the point that I’m making was also conveyed by Ganguly. Don’t give him a debut in a big tournament. First, let him play a few ODI series. Ganguly also had the same point of view,” Kris Srikkanth said.

Srikkanth further praised the youngster and said that he has great potential and is a brilliant player. The former player later took a dig at Varma and added that he shouldn’t be included in the first eleven in the forthcoming ODI World Cup.
“Tilak Varma has fantastic potential. Tilak Varma is a brilliant player. But don’t let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup. Let him play in a few ODI series and then the upcoming T20 World Cup and groom him till the next ODI World Cup. There is something called grooming a youngster,” Kris Srikkanth on the 20-year-old.
Rohit Sharma-led India will be playing all of their Asia Cup 2023 games in Sri Lanka since the host of the upcoming ODI World Cup has ongoing political turmoil for which the BCCI has refused to play any matches in Pakistan.
India will start their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Pakistan on Saturday (September 2nd) and the match will be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka.
