Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has said that Shubman Gill sharing a better yo-yo score than Virat Kohli doesn’t mean one-upmanship. Sunil Gavaskar also feels that Virat Kohli has to be admired for his fitness.
Ahead of Asia Cup 2023, Indian players underwent a yo-yo Test. After the fitness drill, Virat Kohli shared his yo-yo test score of 17.2 on Instagram. Later, Shubman Gill also shared his yo-yo score, which read 18.7. Hence, Gill had a better yo-yo score than Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli Should Be Admired For His Fitness: Sunil Gavaskar
However, in his column for Mid-Day, Sunil Gavaskar wrote that Shubman Gill sharing his yo-yo score was no one-upmanship. Gavarkar explained that there is an age difference between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill which fans should consider before comparing their fitness.
“There was a lot of excitement when Kohli put out his YoYo score which was more than the limit that the BCCI trainers had set. Shubman Gill posting an even better YoYo score than Virat was by no means one-upmanship. The age difference between the two mustn’t be forgotten and the elder has to be admired for his fitness standard”.
“The BCCI then directed that nobody should post their YoYo test scores which might have actually saved some blushes for some,” Gavaskar wrote.
The BCCI has set the minimum limit for yo-yo test as 16.5. Since Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill’s yo-yo test scores became a talking point among cricket fans, BCCI has now directed players that they should not make this confidential information public.

Yo-Yo Test Should Be Done In Public Domain, Feels Sunil Gavaskar
However, Sunil Gavaskar also feels that since the yo-yo test determines a player’s selection into a tournament or campaign, this should be done in the public domain.
“If it is true that unless the minimum standard of the YoYo test is not met, then the player is not eligible for selection then it’s all the more important for this test to be done in the public domain so that the public that follows the game in millions know that there are no players who have not met the minimum standard in the team,” Gavaskar further wrote.
The players who were not part of the India vs Ireland T20I series underwent the yo-yo test ahead of Asia Cup 2023. All the players including Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya, among others, passed the yo-yo test.
Meanwhile, India is set to clash with Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023. The Super Four encounter takes place on September 10 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
