Sheer drama unfolded on Day 1 of the 2nd test between India and South Africa at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. Test cricket did not look like a test match itself as bowlers from both sides reigned supreme on a pitch that did not offer any help at all for the batters. The visitors’ batting line-up also claimed a record they will not be so proud of and it was led by opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal.

After India’s fantastic day out with the ball led by Mohammed Siraj, the batting line-up failed to capitalize on that start. South Africa were bowled out for just 55 runs with Siraj claiming career best figures of 6/15 while Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar ended up with figures of 2/25 and 2/0 respectively.

Most of us would have thought that it would now be a walk in the park for India as they attempt to equal the series but South African bowlers had revenge on their minds. Left-hand batter Yashasvi Jaiswal became the first to depart or one can say started the trend of getting out for a duck.

Except for Rohit Sharma (39), Shubman Gill (36), Virat Kohli (46), and KL Rahul (8), every single one in the team departed for a duck. Mohammed Siraj who breathed fire throughout his spell, had to walk out for a golden duck.

India’s embarrassment in the 2nd innings, helped them attain a few records that they were doing better off without. Firstly, it was for the first time in test cricket that a team lost back-to-back 6 wickets without registering a single run on the board.

It happened after the departure of KL Rahul when India were 153/5. Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mukesh Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, all came to the crease and left without scoring a single run as the score remained 153 with India getting all out by the 35th over.

The South African bowlers did not waste any time to give the Indian batters the taste of their own medicine in a pitch that produced a lot of bounce. It would be fair to say that bowlers from both teams were able to stick to their plans and remained disciplined with their line lengths.

Indian Batters Register Highest Number Of Ducks In A Single Innings

The 2nd record that the Indian team achieved was the highest number of ducks in a single innings. 6 Indian batters had to depart for a duck and it was the second time, an instance like this took place. Back in 2014 when India took on England in a test match at Manchester, Indian batters had registered 6 ducks as well and were bowled out for 152.

Moreover, 23 wickets fell yesterday at Newlands, which is the 2nd most number of wickets fell on a day with the first being 25 during a test match between Australia and England back in 1904. On Day 2, Markram and Bedingham will resume shrinking the current trail of 36.
