IND vs WI: "Did We Make A Mistake" - Aakash Chopra On Ravichandran Ashwin Being Snubbed From WTC Final

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has commented on Ravichandran Ashwin after his comeback performance against West Indies on day 1 of the Dominica Test match. Ashwin took 5/60 as the Windies were bundled out for 150.

It was Ashwin’s 33rd five wicket-haul in Test cricket as he broke several records on day 1. He first overtook Anil Kumble’s tally of 94 bowled dismissals in Test cricket. He leads the list with 95 bowled dismissals, the most by an Indian bowler in Test cricket.

The 36-year-old became the first Indian and fifth player to dismiss a father and son in Test cricket. The senior all-rounder also became the third Indian bowler to take 700 wickets in international cricket.

Seeing how Ashwin announced his comeback into the Indian Test team, Chopra said that not picking him for the WTC final against Australia was a mistake.

“The entire team was bowled out for 150 after opting to bat. Ashwin picked up a five-wicket haul. Did we make a mistake in the WTC final, he made us realize that a little” said Chopra while reviewing the first day’s play on his Youtube channel.

Chopra further said that Ashwin is on his way to proving his pre-series prediction of the off-spinner winning the Man of the Series award.

“The sort of pitches we have in Dominica or the West Indies, before the series I had predicted that Ravichandran Ashwin will be Player of the Series and he is on track currently. If he continues like this, he will become that as well” added Chopra.

Ravichandran Ashwin has enjoyed tremendous success against West Indies in Test cricket. He now has 65 wickets against them at an average of 21.09. Ashwin has also scored four centuries against the opposition amassing 552 runs at an average of 50.18 in 12 Tests.

Team India were well placed at 80 for no loss at stumps after the first day’s play. Skipper Rohit Sharma is unbeaten on 30 while debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal is unbeaten on 40. Shubman Gill is slotted to bat at number three.
