IND vs WI: Ishant Sharma Backs Yashasvi Jaiswal To Score Century On Test Debut

Veteran fast-bowler Ishant Sharma believes Yashasvi Jaiswal will have a great opportunity to mark his Test debut with a century when he walks out to bat on day two of the ongoing first Test between West Indies and India in Dominica.
India are in a commanding position after the opening day of the Test. Asked to bowl first on a slow pitch, the Rohit Sharma-led side bowled out West Indies for a paltry total of 150. Spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin starred with the ball, taking five for 60 while Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets. Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj picked up one wicket each.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal then came up with a solid partnership. The India skipper and the debutant did not let the hosts claim any breakthrough as they batted the visitors to a strong position. India were on 80 for no loss at stumps with Yashasvi Jaiswal batting on 40 and Rohit unbeaten on 30. And Ishant Sharma believes both the batsmen will be targeting personal milestones on day two.
“Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will look to be guarded in their approach in the first hour. They will say to themselves that it’s ok even if we don’t score runs, because we already have a strong base. They will try to score the remaining 70 runs by taking their time because there’s still a lot of time in this game,” Ishant said on JioCinema.
Speaking about Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishant said: “He now has a platform to build on. He should first try to reach his fifty and then gradually build his innings. It’s a great opportunity for him to target a century.”

Ishant Sharma’s advice for West Indies:
While West Indies are firmly on the back foot, Ishant Sharma believes the hosts can still fight back if they are focused enough. Giving some valuable advice to the home side, Ishant said that they should not remain focused even if they fail to pick up early wickets in the first session on day two.
“For the West Indies, the first session will be crucial. Even if they are not able to get wickets in the first hour, they should try to stay in the game by curtailing the run rate,” said Ishant.
“India are 80 without loss just now but the hosts will realise that if they give away only about 20 runs or so in the first hour, they could also be in a good position to take wickets after that. From there, they can bank on the pitch to help their spinners,” he added.
